What Makes a Website Convert — Not Just Look Good
Design is only half the story. The real engine behind sales is a clear structure, fast performance, and simple storytelling that moves a visitor from curiosity to commitment. Here’s a practical, human checklist you can apply to any site today.
1) Structure: Guide the eye, reduce the thinking
Above the fold (first screen)
- One-line value proposition: what you do + for whom + outcome.
Example: “Stress-free bookkeeping for UK trades—done weekly, not monthly.”
- One primary call to action (CTA): “Get a Quote,” “Book a Free Audit,” or “Start a 7-day Trial.”
- Tiny proof line: “Trusted by 1,200+ local businesses.”
Winning page flow (hero → proof → offer → detail → reassurance → CTA)
- Hero: Clear promise + CTA.
- Proof: Reviews, logos, short wins.
- Offer: What they get, how it works, how pricing works (or what happens next).
- Detail: Features → benefits → outcomes.
- Reassurance: Guarantees, FAQs, compliance, security.
- CTA: Repeat the same action. No new rabbit holes.
One page, one purpose. Each page should drive one main action. If you sell multiple offers, give each its own page.
Navigation: keep it to five items or fewer. Add a sticky CTA on desktop and a fixed CTA bar on mobile.
2) Speed: Conversion’s silent killer (or multiplier)
- Aim to load under 2 seconds on mobile.
- Compress images (prefer modern formats like WebP).
- Trim scripts: remove heavy sliders, pop-ups, and autoplay video.
- Use one web font (or system fonts) to reduce requests.
- Lazy-load media below the fold for instant first content.
Slow sites feel untrustworthy. Fast sites feel premium—and they get more form submits, bookings, and checkouts.
3) Storytelling: Make the visitor the hero
Message order that converts: Problem they feel → Promise you can prove → Plan that’s simple → Proof it works → Push to act now.
Write like you talk: short sentences, simple words, concrete outcomes. Replace “optimize” with “get more bookings this week.”
Show outcomes, not features
Feature: “Automated reminders.”
Outcome: “Fewer no-shows and more revenue with the same ad spend.”
Specific beats clever. “Fix your roof leak in 48 hours” outperforms “Roofing solutions reimagined.”
Trust signals: Borrow belief until you earn it
- Numbers: “4.9★ from 317 reviews,” “£2.4M saved for clients in 2024.”
- Logos: media mentions, certifications, partners.
- Screenshots: before/after, dashboards, timelines.
- Real faces: founder headshot, team photos with names.
- Risk reversal: guarantees, free audits, or “no-fix-no-fee.”
Place a proof block right after the hero and again near the final CTA.
Offers & CTAs: Make the next step feel safe
Default to low friction: “Free strategy call,” “Instant estimate,” “Website health check.”
Clarify what happens next: “Book a 15-minute call → get a tailored plan.”
Repeat the same CTA 3–5 times down the page; don’t invent new ones.
Helpful microcopy
- “No pitch—just a plan.”
- “Takes 60 seconds.”
- “See price before you decide.”
Mobile first: Design for thumbs
- Readable text (16–18px+), generous spacing, scannable sections.
- Tap-friendly buttons (full-width on mobile).
- Sticky CTA at the bottom.
- Test your forms on your phone. If you wouldn’t fill it on a bus, it’s too long.
Forms that don’t scare people
- Ask only what you need to qualify or contact.
- Use two-step forms (short first step → longer second step).
- Offer alternatives: phone/WhatsApp, or “request a callback.”
Simple templates you can copy
Service Business (e.g., Roofing, Real Estate, Dental)
- Hero: promise + location + CTA
- Three quick benefits with icons
- Proof block (reviews/logos)
- Process in 3 steps
- Offer + guarantee
- FAQ
- Final CTA
Local Lead Gen (e.g., HVAC, Plumbing, Landscaping)
- Hero: urgent value + phone + CTA
- Trust badges (24/7, licensed, insured)
- Pricing or “from” rates
- Map/service areas
- Reviews carousel
- Short form + phone
Coaching/Consulting
- Outcome-driven hero
- Short founder story + authority
- Case studies with metrics
- Program breakdown
- Bonus/guarantee
- Calendar embed
Quick pre-launch checklist
- 5-second test: can a stranger say what you do and for whom?
- One primary CTA repeated across the page
- Loads under 2s on mobile
- Proof near the top and bottom
- Short, thumb-friendly forms
- Every section ends with a clear next step
